candidates for
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
The open positions are in the fields of cancer cell biology and/or virus-host interactions in a project funded by Academy
of Finland.
Our research is
focused
to study the role of lymphatic endothelium in the tumor
microenvironment and cancer metastasis. We are interested in the changes
in the tumorigenic properties of the
cancer cells upon contact with the lymphatic endothelium, (Pekkonen et
al, eLife 2018; PMID:29712618) and also in the changes induced in the
lymphatics by the tumor cells. In the virus-host interaction studies we
are using Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV),
an oncogenic human gamma-2 herpesvirus, as a model system to study
cancer development and progression (Gramolelli et al, Sci Rep 2018;
PMID:29934628).
Ultimately, our studies aim to provide
mechanistic insights into both improving existing clinical regimens and
in identifying novels targets for therapeutic intervention.
We
are looking for highly motivated post-doctoral fellows who have
successfully completed a PhD
in a field relevant to the molecular and cellular biology of cancer
and/or virology and published at least one peer-reviewed article in a
Pubmed-indexed journal. Experience in mammalian cell culture, cell and
molecular biology, as well as microscopy techniques
are required. Candidates with demonstrated skills and prior experience
in the analysis of NGS datasets and/or mouse tumor models as well as
proven track record in terms of publications will be given preference.
Initial contract of employment will be done until the end of 2020 and
starting as soon as possible.
The contract of employment includes a probationary period of 6 months.

Are you interested in imaging
the inner structure of single cells to understand how drug molecules
reach their subcellular targets? Would you like to contribute to the
establishment of new technologies to study drug disposition/kinetics in
cells and tissues by doing your PhD at AstraZeneca, a company that is
following the science and turning ideas into life changing medicines?
Then you might be the one we are looking for!
AstraZeneca is now recruiting an Industrial PhD student to join theDrug Metabolism Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) New Modalities function within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapy area. CVRM is intensely pursing new drug modalities (e.g peptides, proteolysis targeting chimera “PROTACs”, RNA based therapeutics).
Building an understanding about subcellular trafficking presents a real
opportunity for the development of biopharmaceuticals where we will
design molecules that effectively navigate these pathways to reach their
targets. This PhD project will be done as part of the University of Gothenburg Chemical Imaging Infrastructure (CII)under
the direction of Andrew G. Ewing. The successful candidate will be
employed by AstraZeneca, and work collaboratively within the CII located
at the AZ BioVentureHub, Gothenburg, Sweden.
The PhD project
In
the pursuit of applying new drug modalities we are finding that
intracellular target engagement is of critical importance. Thus,
information concerning intracellular drug concentrations is greatly
needed. However, this information is difficult to obtain, and it has
been suggested that this space is one of the most neglected areas of
drug discovery. AstraZeneca, in association with the CII, has now begun
to integrate Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS)
imaging into the suite of technologies to study drug
disposition/kinetics in cells and tissues.
This project is a Stiftelsen för Strategisk Forskning (SSF)
funded industrial PhD position with the aim of developing a single cell
analytical nano-imaging technique to provide subcellular drug
distribution imaging with high sensitivity. It aims to combine advanced
analytical technologies to solve fundamental biological questions of
intracellular drug trafficking, to study and quantify endosomal escape
and concentration of drug at disease targets inside the cell. You will
develop the ability to bridge the physical aspects of ion/matter
interactions and the biological process under investigation. In addition
to course work and basic training for the PhD, you will develop
scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research
verbally and in writing. The position includes teaching (laboratory or
tutorial) at the undergraduate level or performing other duties
corresponding up to 20 per cent of working hours. Your major
responsibilities will be to pursue your own doctoral studies.
About the CII
The
Chemical Imaging Infrastructure (CII) is a world-unique research
infrastructure with a primary focus on high lateral resolution imaging
mass spectrometry. Internationally CII has a world leading equipment
base backed up by internationally recognized experts in the development
and application of SIMS. CII is hosted by the Department of Chemistry
and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers and by the Department of Chemistry
and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg.
Requirements
To
qualify as a PhD student, you must hold a Master’s level degree in
BioScience, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry,
Chemistry or a similar area.
A strong interest in biology is
required and experience with cell culture an advantage. Experience with
mass spectrometry and image analysis is preferred but not required.
Excellent English in writing and speaking and strong communication skills are required.
Due
to the multi-disciplinary nature of this PhD project, you should
preferably be curious, goal oriented, cooperation minded, and keen on
transferring theoretic and applied academic work into practice.
If you are interested, apply now!

PhD student position in Synthetic Biology for Improved Cell Factories
The SECRETERS Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training
Network aims to develop “ A new generation of microbial expression hosts
and tools for the production of biotherapeutics and high-value enzymes
”. The project will involve extensive collaborations between 6 academic
and 5 industrial participants, who are based in 6 European countries.
The SECRETERS partnership aims to bring about a step change in the
production of recombinant proteins, particularly Biotherapeutics and
Industrial Enzymes. Both are critical products for the EU biotechnology
sector, with combined markets in excess of $140 billion p.a.; the former
are essential for the treatment of major diseases whereas the latter
permeate every aspect of our daily life. Many proteins in these
categories pose severe problems in production, especially
disulfide-bonded proteins and new format ’difficult-to-express’
proteins. SECRETERS will train a team of 15 early stage researchers
(ESRs) to develop a new generation of super-producing microbial
production hosts, including Escherichia coli , Bacillus species and the
yeast Pichia pastoris . The project capitalizes on a series of recent
innovations and involves close collaboration between 6 academic
Beneficiaries, who provide world-leading expertise in redox chemistry,
synthetic biology and protein expression, and 5 non-academic
Beneficiaries, who include some of the world’s premier biotherapeutic
and industrial enzyme companies. It will enable the biotherapeutics
industry to produce challenging medicines at lower costs, resulting in
new drugs and wider patient access, and allow the enzymes industry to
deliver a range of powerful new products. Based on a responsible
innovation approach, with clear foci on research and entrepreneurial
training, SECRETERS will deliver a team of superbly-trained scientists,
poised to engage in some of Europe’s most important biotechnology
sectors.
