DOCTORAL RESEARCHER (Quantitative analysis of cell surface glycan engagement in nanoparticle endocytosis)
The position is a fixed term position, starting as soon as possible after the recruitment decision is made. The appointment is until 31 August 2027. The position is filled with a 6 month probationary period.
The appointment is in the Academy of Finland research project led by docent Shiqi Wang, at the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology. The aim of the project is to develop a new assay using bioorthogonal reactions to study the role of cell surface glycan (a major component of cell membranes) in nanoparticle internalization. The successful candidate is expected to develop, optimize and validate the assay using different nanoparticles and cells. Your work will contribute to the fundamental understanding of how nanomaterials enter cells, which is of great importance for their biomedical applications.
The duties of the doctoral researcher include conducting research in the project framework with the aim of achieving doctoral degree in accordance with the degree requirements of the University of Helsinki, supervision of undergraduate students, and other discipline-specific teaching. The teaching duties will cover a maximum of 5 % of the total working hours.

Salary And Benefits
The salary is based on the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff according to the salary system of the Finnish universities. The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is looking for a Doctoral Researcher for the Academy of Finland funded research projects on exercise and circulating signalling particles.
The position is fixed-term starting 2 October 2023, or as agreed, for maximum of four years.
Tasks and qualifications
As a doctoral researcher, your tasks include writing and reporting on your dissertation plan and research, carrying out postgraduate studies and participating in social interaction. Your work may also include other research and teaching tasks. The scope of the dissertation is equivalent to four years of full-time work.
We require a Master’s degree in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, exercise sciences or other appropriate field, the right to study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Jyväskylä and fluent written and oral English skills. Knowledge of circulating signalling (lipoproteins such as HDL, extracellular vesicles) and exercise physiology as well as experience in cell culture will be considered as an advantage for the applicant.
If the applicant does not have the right to study for a postgraduate degree when applying for the position, a separate application must be submitted to the relevant faculty, considering the application deadlines. Description Of The Position
As a Research Scientist, you will be
A key member of the ADME-Tox team contributing to overall team objectives, seeking the best science to support development objectives of Orion Pharma R&D.
Responsible for setting-up in vitro toxicology screening methods and developing methods in automation.
Supporting and taking part in culturing the mammalian cell lines and primary cells, and carrying out in vitro toxicology assays from preparation of the samples through to the sample analysis.
Responsible for data processing, interpretation and reporting to internal stakeholders.
Supervising the work of research associates.
Actively interacting with the team members as well as collaborate with other teams in Orion Pharma R&D.
This position is fixed-term until November 2024, and it is based in Turku, Finland.
Description Of The Unit
ADME-Tox unit, as a part of DMPK and Safety Sciences, Orion R&D, is responsible for the early ADME and safety assessments of new drug candidates. We provide assay services and scientific expertise in in vitro ADME and toxicology for small molecule projects throughout the drug development process, supporting our therapy areas, Oncology and Pain. You will be part of multi-disciplinary team of expert in vitro scientists and experienced research associates working in two locations, Espoo and Turku.

MSc degree in toxicology, pharmacy, biochemistry, cell biology or equivalent qualification with several years’ experience of in vitro laboratory work.
Experience in working in pharmaceutical industry highly appreciated.
Mastering of cell-based and molecular biology assays, and ability to translate knowledge into new validated methods.
Knowledge and hands-on experience with flow cytometry, high content imaging, luminescence and fluorescence-based detection methods.
Deep understanding in experiment design and ability to analyze and interpret complex data.
Knowledge of toxicology or nonclinical safety is a benefit.
Experience in laboratory automation is advantageous.
Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
Demonstrated good team and networking skills.
Forward thinking mindset with the ability to manage multiple tasks, and proactively identify and resolve issues.
