Oncology Research is accountable for the discovery of novel targets and drug projects related biology reseach in the therapy area of oncology at Orion. Immuno-oncology team is one of four reseach teams in Oncology Research, and our teams build the R&D Oncology portfolio and Oncology strategy in close collaboration with business and all R&D global functions. How will you make an impact?

We are looking for a proactive Manufacturing Engineer with a background in chemistry, biosciences, laboratory sciences or other applied natural sciences, with a knowhow or interest in process engineering. Ideally you have experience of production processes in a regulated industry. You will support production processes of existing products and design transfer of new products into manufacturing in the Clinical Diagnostics Solutions business unit of Vantaa Operations organization. In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining and updating the manufacturing documentation and managing common operational system instructions in the area of own responsibility. One of the responsibilities is managing the customer feedback investigation of the products. Furthermore, you will be involved in validation planning, execution and reporting of various manufacturing related processes. The position is fixed-term until 31st of August 2020.

What will you do?

  • Lead annual stability plans preparation, execution, data processing, reporting and documentation for clinical and industrial diagnostics products, supporting regulative and other quality requirements.
  • Act as one responsible person in the validation planning, execution, data processing, reporting and documentation for the manufacturing processes of new products, or existing ones requiring revalidation.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER position (fixed-term) for the period of 1 January 2020 – 31 December 2021.

The start of employment is negotiable. The position is fixed-term for 24 months with a possibility for extension. Trial period is 4 months.

We are seeking a highly motivated computational biologist to join the research group of Dr Teemu Niiranen (Department of Clinical Medicine) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. We work on a wide range of topics with a current focus on multi-omics analysis in large-scale population cohorts. The research can comprise both applied and methodological aspects depending on the candidate’s interests and expertise.

The duties of Postdoctoral Researcher include the analysis of population-level omics data (genomics, metagenomics, metabolomics etc.) aiming at groundbreaking biological discoveries. The key data sources include comprehensively phenotyped, large national and international human cohorts whose plasma and/or fecal samples have been analyzed in leading laboratories using high-throughput (metagenomic) sequencing and/or state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. Different project areas related to multi-omics data integration, analysis of longitudinal cohort data, and the discovery of personalized disease biomarkers are available.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Qualification requirements for the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher are stated in the Rules of Procedure of the University of Turku. Postdoctoral Researcher is required to have an applicable doctoral degree. They should also be able to conduct research independently and possess teaching skills required in the position.

A suitable candidate has:

– PhD in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biology, Mathematics, Medicine or a related field
– Relevant background knowledge including proven bioinformatics skills and a solid publication track record
– Experience in statistical data analysis, integration, and visualization
– Fluency in at least one data science language (such as Python, R, or Julia)
– Ability to work both independently and in a team
– Willingness to learn new and multidisciplinary skills as needed
– Good communication and interpersonal skills and English language skills
– Good scientific writing skills

SALARY

The salary is determined in accordance with the salary system for universities. The salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is at levels 4-6 on the job demands chart of teaching and research personnel. The job-related salary element is 2535,20-3423,25 euros per month. In addition, a personal salary element will be paid. The personal salary element is a maximum of 50 % of the job-related salary element.

The position is available in the Biomedical Informatics research group (http://www.uef.fi/web/biomedicine/biomedicalinformatics) led by Dr Vittorio Fortino, in the recently launched EU H2020 project BIOMAP.

The project is focused on the analysis of multi-omics data for identifying and targeting personalized treatments in two common chronic skin diseases: atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (Pso). The aim of the project is to develop novel computational methods and tools for multi-omics data modelling and the definition of disease subtypes and predictive biomarkers. The topics of the research projects will be discussed in more detail during the interview of the selected candidates.

A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

Good command of the English language is required.

Applicants with a background in molecular biology and bioinformatics analysis of next-generation sequencing and microarray data are encouraged to apply. Persons graduating in the near future are also encouraged to apply. However, they are expected to hold a relevant MSc degree (or equivalent) by the starting date of the early stage researcher position. Internationally, the most important breakthrough medicines have recently been therapeutic proteins, such as monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins and coagulation factors. It is noteworthy that pharmaceutical industry, also in Finland, is emphasizing protein drug development, but education of experts in this field in Finland is still very limited. Pharmaceutical development of protein drugs involves therapeutic protein production, engineering, formulation and delivery. This field is at the interface of biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences.

The position will be based at the Division of Pharmaceutical Biosciences. Main responsibilities of the appointee will include leading a research group that conducts top-level research in the aforementioned fields that are relevant in pharmaceutical protein development. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN PHARMACOLOGY AND DRUG DEVELOPMENT

The field of the position is in pre-clinical pharmacology and drug development. Pharmacological research in the drug discovery and development phase involves topics such as identification of new drug targets, elucidating the mode of action of drug substances, and investigating their effects on targets in vitro and in vivo. In addition, modern methods such as CRISPR/Cas9 technology, human induced pluripotent cells (hiPSCs) and organoids give pharmacological research new possibilities in the discovery of the next generation of drugs by development of precision disease models, accelerating the identification and validation of high-value targets, and phenotypic drug screening.

In addition to scientific research, the appointee is responsible for undergraduate (bachelor and master in pharmacy) and postgraduate level education. The teaching has its main focus on pharmacology including those underlying therapeutic drug actions and adverse drug reactions. The position will be based at the Division of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND ASSESSMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage. An appointee to the position of an assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research work, have the teaching skills necessary for the position, and have the ability and motivation for an academic career.

An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

The successful candidate is expected to have experience in teaching full spectrum of pharmacology including drug toxicology at university level, experience in leading a research group and to attract independent financial grant support.

Pharmacometabolomics involves comprehensive analysis of metabolites, proteins and pathways in biological systems focused to understand disease mechanisms, identify novel drug targets, customize drug treatments and monitor therapeutic outcomes.

The main responsibilities of the appointee are to act as a group leader of metabolomics and proteomics projects, to develop mass spectrometric and data handling methods for metabolomics and proteomics, and to conduct independent and collaborative research.
